Gold stripe pleated midi skirt
It's not often I'm completely happy with something I've made, but this skirt is an exception! I used high quality striped fabric from The Fabric Store, which sits perfectly. The skirt was made using the BurdaStyle 115 pleated midi skirt pattern with some slight changes. I decided to omit the pockets, as I prefer not to have too much bulk around my hips. I also opted not to go for the front fly included in the pattern and instead placed the zip at the back of the skirt. This was a fairly simple adjustment to make.
I also top stitched the pleats from the waist to the widest part of my hips in order to create a more tailored fit.
The pattern uses a simple construction with basic seams. The gold thread in this fabric does fray slightly at the edges, so an overlocker would be handy, though not essential. This fabric also has a slight stretch - just enough to make it comfortable without making it difficult to sew!
Pleats can be frustrating to pin in place, but these pleats were fairly simple. I also really like the width of the pleats - there are just enough pleats to keep the skirt from looking too puffy. I originally thought the centre seam was a bit of an odd choice, but it worked really well when the skirt was finished.
I'm not a big fan of interfacing and found that this skirt really didn't need it. That said, I did use quite a structured fabric. If you're planning to use something a bit more floaty, you may find that you require interfacing.
One downside I found was that the pattern called for an 18cm zip, which I wasn't able to find in my local fabric store. If you're planning on a high waisted fit, I would suggest a longer rather than shorter zip!
