Sewing a DIY Summer Top
When I previously visited The Fabric Store in Fitzroy, I picked up two fabrics, one for the skirt I made in my post DIY Pencil Skirt Using an Existing Skirt and another to make this light-weight summer top. I didn't really have any plans to make a top, but I fell in love with the fabric and had to buy it. The pretty pattern seemed like a unique and modern take on florals, so I bought a metre of fabric without knowing what to do with it. I decided to go DIY again to keep things simple, and used the basic shape of a collared cream top which I already had, since I wanted something loose fitting which wouldn't require buttons or a zip.
It was such an easy project and all that was required was turning the existing top inside out to trace the shape of the front and back pieces, and then adding a 1.5cm seam allowance. Since this fabric is so light-weight, I also made a facing for the neck line to keep it structured. The most difficult part was sewing the arm holes since it required so much turning of the fabric, however after a bit of unpicking I finally completed them. This is a lovely top to wear with jeans or a skirt and could be dressed up or down depending on what you pair it with.
